A day in the life and home of a child in an informal settlement

This morning I woke up a little earlier than usual. It was cold outside and I had no blanket. So I could not fall back to sleep. Then I was just sitting in bed and waiting for morning. But after a while I got thirsty. So I thought about getting some water but I had no shoes so I did not want to go because I didn’t want to get sick.
A few hours later it was time for me to go to school. When I got there it was cramped. Their is never enough chairs so some of us kids have to go on our knees. But after a while it starts hurting. It is usually hard to focus because everyone has to share 1 textbook.
A few hours later it was time to go home. So now I had to

walk a long way to go back home. When I got home my mom was cooking some rice and it smelled great. Then I went to the toilet and it was disgusting because it was a long drop toilet wich is dangerous for little kids. I did not want to get sick so after I used it I ran to the tap so I could wash my hands and I did not want to make other people sick because I know that there is only 1 doctor for 3000 people. On the way home I saw some kids making toys out of all the rubbish. I helped them make a few and then I went home. The food was ready so I ate and brushed my teeth and went to bed. I was hoping I would sleep a little longer than I did the night before. But other than all the bad stuff there is some really nice things to do here in the informal
settlement. I wish that the people here had more food and
bigger income to pay for a proper school. It also would be nice if we had some warm shoes to wear when we go to school in the cold mornings. But I am still glad to have what I have.
